Progress at Cemetery Ridge

Last Updated on 02/15/2013

Anyone touring the battlefield recently noticed some new activity occurring at Cemetery Ridge as Interior Specialists, Inc. (a contractor funded by the Gettysburg Foundation) put up a construction fence around the Gettysburg Cyclorama building. The demolition of the building will begin after the asbestos abatement process is completed, which will likely take several weeks.

The Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation expect to have the demolition portion of the project competed before the end of this summer.

On January 10, 2013 the National Park Service issued a decision regarding the future of the Cyclorama building at Gettysburg National Military Park and concluding the park’s environmental assessment (EA) planning process. The decision document, known as a Finding of No Significant Impact, or “FONSI,” calls for demolition of the Cyclorama building in order to rehabilitate North Cemetery Ridge on the Gettysburg battlefield to its historic 1863 battle, and 1864 – 1938 commemorative-era appearance. The Gettysburg Foundation will provide the funds necessary for the demolition in order to rehabilitate this critical area.

Thank you to all of our members and supporters who have supported the rehabilitation of Cemetery Ridge for the past 10 years. We look forward to keeping you updated on the future progress of this project.
