What is the Remembrance Illumination?

The next Remembrance Illumination will be Saturday, November 22, 2008.

Each year on Gettysburg's Remembrance Day, the Friends of Gettysburg sponsors the Remembrance Illumination in the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg. During the Luminaria, a luminary candle will be lit on each of the 3,500 Civil War soldier graves in the National Cemetery, paying homage to those who here gave their "last full measure of devotion."

The Luminaria project supports the Friends' mission, on behalf of all generations of Americans, to honor, support, protect and enhance the resources associated with the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Battle of Gettysburg and the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

Remembrance Day is held in Gettysburg each year on the Saturday closest to November 19, which is the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
