Union General Winfield Scott Hancock was one of the most influential personalities involved with the Battle of Gettysburg. Arriving on the field late on July 1 (the first day of the three-day battle), Hancock took control of the Union forces on Cemetery Ridge, preparing them to face Confederate assaults on July 2-3. He was one of Union commander George Gordon Meade's most trusted generals.
