Today's post will focus on a much smaller craft which would have been important in the landing of soldiers and sailors in amphibious operations along the coasts and rivers of the Confederacy.
This US Navy long boat was sketched at come point during the Civil War by sketch artist Alfred Waud. Also featured is a rough outline of a sailor. These small boats were very important to transfer officers and men from ship to ship, to land soldiers and sailors on land, and to serve as lifeboats if a ship sank. It seems odd for Waud to have sketched such a simple thing, but a surprising percentage of his sketches are of ships or otherwise nautically themed indicating that he had an interest in drawing them to pleasure as opposed for his employer Harper's Weekly.
