January 29th, 2012: Civil War Portraits
Posted on: 01/27/2012
Today’s portrait will be of a Confederate officer and his family.

In this rare shot a Confederate captain poses with who is presumably his wife and child. You don’t see images like this very often. Most photos are either of soldiers or civilians and not both. Even less common is to have an infant in the shot, which may indicate that the captain was on a furlough or newly enlisted so that he was close to home when he and his family had this picture made. The officer is unidentified, so we have no way of knowing if he made it back to his family at the end of the war.
