For our portrait today we will feature a Confederate artilleryman who was possibly an officer.
We think this young Confederate artilleryman may have been an officer because his jacket is double breasted, with two rows of buttons. While not always the case, especially early in the war, a double breasted jacket would have usually been worn by an officer. We know this soldier was in the artillery because the photographer hand painted his cap red, which was the branch color for the artillery in both armies. Also, on the front of his cap are crossed canons, also the insignia for artillery in both Union and Confederate armies.
