America's Volunteer Project: Friends Rebuilding History
Stewardship 150
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Friends of Gettysburg is embarking on an extensive rehabilitation project primarily focusing on the area that saw the first day of fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Known as America’s Volunteer Project: Friends Rebuilding History; we have committed to build and maintain nearly 10 miles of fences from Fairfield Road to the Mummasburg Road and beyond in an effort to return this un-rehabilitated area of the battlefield to its 1863 appearance.
Through a series of volunteer service vacations and individual service days that expand our already popular Volunteer Workday, we will accomplish this goal over the four year commemoration 2011-2015. June ‘11 kicked off the project with 100 volunteers rebuilding 1.1 miles of fences around the Day 1 area.
Taking on such an ambitious project would not be possible without a commitment from our members and supporters. Friends of Gettysburg members have proven to be essential for landscape rehabilitation and a true partner of the Gettysburg National Military Park. Your support is crucial to the success of this project.
