"Longstreet at Gettysburg"  featuring Licensed Battlefield Guide Jim Hessler

Saturday, March 3,2012

No Confederate participant at Gettysburg has been the subject of more controversy than General James Longstreet.  This seminar will examine and analyze Longstreet's performance during the Gettysburg campaign.  Topics will include: his alleged preference to fight a defensive battle, the many controversies surrounding his July 2 attack on the Union left flank, "Pickett's Charge" on July 3, and his post-war battles with General Lee's partisans.  Was Longstreet "slow" and "sulking" at Gettysburg as many of his critics claim?  Was he a dedicated soldier executing a flawed strategy by General Lee?  Was he a post-war victim of politics, the "Lost Cause," or self-inflicted  wounds created by his own writings?

This day long seminar will include lunch, coffee and soda.  Recommended Reading: Jeffry D. Wert, James Longstreet: William Garrett Piston, Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant: James Longstreet and His Place in Southern History; Douglas Southall Freeman, Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command.

This seminar is limited to 55 attendees.  Registration deadline is February 17, 2012.
