Adams Seminar: October 25, 2014

September 26, 2015: Adams Seminar

The Barns of the Gettysburg Battlefield: Their Architecture and Role in the Battle with Historic Gettysburg Adams County Barn Preservation Project Chairman Curt Musselman

An Adams Seminar is a full-day program consisting of a half-day indoor lecture and a half-day battlefield tour.

This presentation will describe the different styles of barns present on the Gettysburg Battlefield today, and will look at the battle action that took place in and around these barns. The morning lecture will examine the evolution of the design of barns on the battlefield and in this part of Pennsylvania during the 19th century. The National Park Service owns twenty historic barns at the Gettysburg National Military Park and over one-half of them were witnesses to the epic battle. During the field portion of the program we will enter a number of the National Park Service’s barns including the McPherson, Trostle and Slyder barns to see both unique features and features that are typical of almost every barn on the field.

The seminar begins in the Ford Education Center, located at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325. A boxed lunch is available for an additional $12.00. If ordering a boxed lunch, please provide the type of sandwich requested in the comment box below- options include: ham, turkey, roast beef, or vegetarian.
