It has long been a truism that the Union Army fought a defensive battle at Gettysburg. While this has an element of veracity to it, on July 2nd the AOP also initiated a series of counterattacks, particularly at its center, which may have turned the tide of the battle. The classroom session of this program will assess the tactical situation on July 2nd, the impact that the decision-making of Daniel Sickles and James Longstreet had upon that day, and how it brought about a series of Union Counterattacks initiated primarily by Generals Meade and Hancock. The morning session will also look at a number of the counterattacks including the brigades of George Willard and Henry Lockwood, and regiments like the 1st MN, 13th VT, and 106th PA, as well as the people who were involved. The afternoon field session will take participants on a moderate hike to selected areas where these counterattacks started and struck to examine their impact upon the battlefield by the end of July 2nd.

Union Counterattacks on July 2nd Adams Seminar is also offered on May 17th. To register for the May 17th seminar, please follow this link: http://www.friendsofgettysburg.org/EventsCalendar/AdamsSeminarMay172014.aspx
